1.3 THE BASIC UNIT OF COMMUNICATION - THE SENTENCE A sentence is the basic unit of communication, written or spoken. There are different kinds of sentences. A simple sentence consists of a subject and a verb. Example: "Jesus wept." (John 11:35) In this two-word sentence the subject is “Jesus” and the verb is “wept.” There may also be one-word sentences, such as in a command: “Go!” The subject, “you” is implied or understood.
